Fakenham Town will face Harleston in the Semi-Final of the Norfolk Senior Cup – but only after they were forced to replay their Quarter-Final tie against Diss Town on Tuesday night.

The replay came about after a Norfolk FA meeting last Friday, when it was deemed that two players who featured in the 1-0 win were in fact ineligible.

Ordinarily that would mean immediate expulsion from the competition. However, as the error had originated from the suspension list provided to the club by the Norfolk FA, The Ghosts were more unfortunate in their selection than trying to pull the wool.

While the list clearly stated the suspensions for Sam Garner and Kyle Plumb would start on Monday, 13 February, both should have read Saturday February 11 instead – an error acknowledged by Norfolk FA’s Matt Carpenter shortly before the semi-final draw was made.

Ultimately, the ruling turned out to be irrelevant, as The Ghosts beat  Diss 2-1 on Tuesday. A first half opener from George Abbott was cancelled out midway through the second half by Callum Webb for Diss, before Josh Youngs scored with a diving header in the 85th minute, sending The Ghosts into a semi-final against Anglian Combination Premier Division high-flyers Harleston on Wednesday March 15, at the FDC.

The cup win came after Fakenham had returned from Stanway Rovers with a hard fought 1-0 win at the weekend.

Ghosts manager Wayne Anderson had been concerned Friday’s decision could have an adverse effect on his squad’s preparation, but clearly that wasn’t the case as Ashley Jarvis scored the winner from the penalty spot against the fifth-placed side. This Saturday, The Ghosts travel to thirdplaced Newmarket Town.

Fakenham’s Reserves side were far from welcoming on Saturday with the visit of Sheringham Reserves, hammering their opponents 12-0 – the opener coming after just 75 seconds.

Ricky Claxton helped himself to a stunning triple hat-trick as The Ghosts cemented their place at the summit of the Anglian Combination Division Three table. Brain, Harrison & East scored the other goals. Brandon Town visit on Saturday (2.30pm).
